A patio slab is not a driveway with furniture on it. The loads are lighter, but the relationship with your house is much closer, and that is where patios go wrong. The slab sits against the structure, it changes where roof runoff and snowmelt end up, and it has to work with door thresholds and existing grade. Get that relationship right and the patio is invisible in the best way. Get it wrong and you have moved water toward the one place you never want it.
The other thing that decides a patio is how large a single field of concrete you are asking for. Big open slabs need a joint plan, and the joints should look intentional rather than sawn in wherever there happened to be room. Patio pricing follows the same drivers as any flatwork: square footage and shape, whether an old patio or a set of footings has to come out, how much base correction and drainage work the yard needs, and how easily concrete can reach the back of the house. Access is the quiet one. A backyard a truck cannot get to means the concrete is moved by pump or by hand, and that shows up in the bid. Add steps for a decorative finish, a thickened area for a hot tub, or a slab fighting a steep lot, and the number moves again.
Enough that water leaves and keeps leaving, which is a judgment your contractor makes for your grade and your drainage. What matters is the direction. Water should have a clear path away from the structure and off the slab, with no low spot where it can stand. Standing water against a house is exactly the condition you are trying to design out.
It usually is, but the detail matters. The slab has to sit at a height that keeps water and snow away from siding and thresholds, and it needs to be free to move independently rather than locked to the structure. Tell your contractor about doors, vents, and hose bibs so the finished height works with all of them.
It can, if it was built for it. A hot tub full of water and people is a concentrated load in one spot, and that is a different request than a slab for a table and chairs. Say where it is going before the pour so your contractor can plan support and reinforcement for that area. Retrofitting it later is not really a thing.
Sometimes, if the existing slab is sound, stable, and low enough that the added height still works with your doors and your grade. More often the old slab is cracked or settled, which means whatever caused that is still sitting under it. Taking it out is what gives someone the chance to fix the base and reset the drainage.
