That is why a good crew spends real time before the truck ever shows up: stripping topsoil and organic material, dealing with soft or wet areas, bringing in and compacting granular base, and confirming the support is uniform across the whole area. Uniform is the word that matters. A slab sitting half on undisturbed ground and half on loose fill will crack at the seam between them, no matter how good the concrete is.
Water is the other half of the same conversation. Before anything is formed, someone should decide where rain and snowmelt will go once the surface is hard and smooth. Slope is not a detail added at the end. It is set in the forms and confirmed as the concrete is screeded. Standing water on a slab freezes, works into the surface, and takes the top layer with it over a few winters. Water running back toward the house is worse. Getting the fall right costs nothing extra at layout and is close to impossible to fix afterward.
Concrete shrinks as it cures, and a large flat panel of shrinking material relieves that stress by cracking. Nobody prevents that. What a contractor can do is decide where it happens. Control joints are cut or tooled into the slab to create a deliberate weak line, so the crack forms down inside a straight groove instead of wandering across the middle of your patio. Joint spacing and layout get planned around the shape of the pour, the reinforcement, and how the slab will be used. It is one of the first things worth asking about on a bid.
Then Utah goes to work on it. Water gets into the surface, freezes, expands, and thaws, over and over, all winter long. That cycling is why surface damage usually starts at the top layer as flaking and pitting rather than as a structural failure. De-icing salt makes it worse by pulling more water into the concrete and driving more freeze cycles, and newer concrete is the most vulnerable to it. If your existing slab has heaved or dropped rather than simply cracked, that is usually a base or drainage story, and a settling house foundation is a different problem handled by a different trade.

Yes. Concrete shrinks as it cures and relieves that stress by cracking, which is exactly why control joints exist. A crack that follows a joint is the slab doing what it was told to do. What deserves a second look is a wide crack, a crack with one side sitting higher than the other, or a crack that keeps opening season after season. Those usually point at the base or at water, not at the concrete itself.
Probably not, at least not first. Concrete that has heaved or settled is usually reporting on what is underneath it: poorly compacted fill, water collecting under the slab, or frost moving the ground. Replacing the surface without correcting that gets you the same result again. Worth noting, a settling or cracking house foundation is a separate problem with its own specialty, and we would point you there rather than pour over it.
They are genuinely different projects with different lifespans. Resurfacing puts a new wearing layer over a slab that is still sound and sitting on stable ground, and it addresses appearance and surface wear. Replacement takes the concrete out, lets someone correct the base and the drainage, and starts the clock over. If your slab is moving, cracked through, or holding water, resurfacing covers the symptom and the lifespan reflects that.
Because the weather at the time of placement changes the finished result. Heat, cold, wind, and rain all affect how fast the surface sets up and how well it can be finished and cured, and once the truck is turning there is no pausing to wait it out. A crew that pushes your date rather than pouring into bad conditions is protecting your slab. Take it as a good sign.
Go easy, especially the first winter. De-icing salts pull water into the surface and drive extra freeze-thaw cycles, and newer concrete is the most vulnerable to that kind of damage. Shoveling early and using sand for traction is much kinder to the surface. If you do use a product, keep it off the concrete as much as you can and rinse the slab down when the weather allows.
