Freeze-Thaw Goes After the Top Layer First

Concrete is not waterproof. Water works into the surface, and when it freezes it expands. Along the Wasatch Front that does not happen once a winter. It happens over and over, as sunny afternoons melt what froze overnight and the temperature crosses back and forth for months. Every cycle puts pressure on the top layer of the slab from the inside, and that pressure is what eventually takes it apart.

That is why freeze-thaw damage shows up as flaking, pitting, and a gritty surface that sheds fine material rather than as a structural break. It usually starts where water sits longest: the low spot in the driveway, the bottom of the steps, the area just inside the garage door, the edge of the patio where runoff crosses. A slab can be perfectly sound underneath and still be losing its surface, and once that starts it does not stop on its own.

De-Icing Salt Is Hardest on the Newest Concrete

De-icing products melt ice by lowering the freezing point, which means more liquid water sitting on your slab at temperatures where it would otherwise be frozen solid. That water soaks in, and then the temperature drops far enough to freeze it anyway. The net effect is more water in the concrete and more freeze cycles per winter, which is precisely the combination that damages a surface. Salt is hard on concrete for reasons that have as much to do with water as with chemistry.

New concrete is the most vulnerable. A slab poured this year has not had the chance to develop the surface durability it will eventually have, so the first winter is the one to be careful with. If you can get through it with shoveling and sand instead of chemicals, do it. If you cannot, keep the product off the concrete as much as possible, avoid piling salted snow on the slab, and rinse the surface when a warm day makes it practical.

Snow Removal That Does Not Chew Up the Surface

Most winter damage to concrete is not dramatic. It is cumulative. Metal blades dragged across a stamped or broom finish, a plow catching a raised joint, an ice chipper going after a frozen layer with a slab underneath it, salted slush piled at the edge of the patio and left to melt in place. Each of these is small, and together they age a surface faster than the weather does.

The kinder routine is the boring one. Shovel early, before traffic packs snow into ice. Keep blades off decorative surfaces and off raised edges. Use sand when you need grip rather than reaching for a chemical first. Push snow to a spot that drains away from the house and off the slab, not to the low corner where it will melt, pool, and refreeze on the concrete for the rest of the week.

Where the Meltwater Goes Decides What Freezes

Winter is mostly a drainage problem. A slab with proper fall sheds meltwater into the yard, and what leaves cannot freeze on your concrete. A slab that ponds gives water an invitation to sit, soak, and cycle, and that low spot will be the first place the surface fails. That is why slope gets decided in the forms rather than argued about later, and why a birdbath in a driveway is worth taking seriously rather than living with.

The same logic applies to where water lands. Downspouts discharging onto a walk, a patio that drains toward the house, or a driveway that sends runoff down into an attached garage all create ice where you least want it and push water into the ground where it will do damage. Fixing the drainage is usually cheaper than fixing what the drainage does, and it is the correction with the longest reach.

Placing Concrete in Cold Weather

Concrete can be placed in cold weather, but the conditions on pour day affect the finished result, and crews plan around that. Cold slows the chemistry, changes how the surface sets up and how long the finishing window stays open, and makes protecting the fresh slab from freezing a necessary part of the job rather than an optional extra. This is why late-season schedules move and why a good contractor would rather push your date than pour into the wrong forecast.

If your project lands in the cold half of the year, expect the crew to talk about protection and timing, expect the schedule to be conditional on the weather, and expect them to tell you when the slab can take traffic rather than giving you a number in advance. Also plan on being gentle with that slab during its first winter. It is the one that has had the least chance to toughen up.

Should I seal my concrete before winter?

Sealing is generally a good habit in this climate, because it slows how much water gets into the surface, and less water means fewer freeze cycles doing damage. Timing and product depend on the age of the slab and its finish, so ask the contractor who poured it. Decorative concrete in particular relies on sealer as its wear layer and expects to be resealed on a schedule.

Is sand really better than ice melt?

Sand gives you traction without adding water to the surface or driving extra freeze-thaw cycles, so it is easier on concrete. It does not melt anything, so it is a grip solution rather than a clearing solution, and it needs sweeping up in spring. For a new slab getting through its first winter, that tradeoff is usually worth making.

My driveway started flaking after one winter. What happened?

Surface flaking that early usually points at water and salt working on a young slab, sometimes combined with conditions at the time of placement or curing. Look first at whether that area holds water, whether salted snow gets piled there, and whether the fall carries runoff away.
